Jennifer Wah

Here are two truths and a lie about Jennifer Wah:

  • She has won more than two dozen IABC Gold Quill Awards
  • She is part Chinese.
  • Although she lives and runs her storytelling consulting firm in North Vancouver, she was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

In fact, she was born in the small town hippie haven of Nelson, where her parents taught English at the local college. Her father, Fred Wah, is a former Poet Laureate of Canada.

But sit down anywhere near Jennifer Wah, and chances are, you will end up either hearing, or telling a story. Through the company she founded more than 20 years ago – Forwords Communication Inc. – she tells stories, seeks them, teaches them, and writes them. When she’s not doing that, and if she’s not cooking, gardening, walking, skiing or reading, she’s doing her other favourite job: being a mummy to 12-year-old Leo, and 15-year-old Elena, and volunteering for IABC.

This last part, she’s been doing for more than 30 years, in numerous leadership roles at all levels of the association, and with many projects and committees, including the association’s International Executive Board. She is immediate past chair of the IABC Canada West Region, 15 years after first serving in the role, and is serving as chair of the Fellows Committee this year. She is a regular conference presenter on storytelling.

She is one of only a few IABC leaders in the world named both a Canadian Master Communicator and a Fellow.
